Israel and the Tank

Dear Friends of Lifa:

This special Memorial Day reminds us of how many Americans have fought and died to preserve our freedom. We have a lot to learn about how important military is from our recent visit to Israel. Israel must be ready every day to defend itself

This timely trip during the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem was primarily focused on defense strategies and the control of borders. If Israel let its guard down even for a moment it would be immediately overrun by the millions of enemies who surround her.

The tank is a very important part of Israel’s defense strategy. The entire country is only about the size of New Jersey and if they are to defend themselves they need to be well prepared to fight land battles, in hilly and in desert terrain, and that means tanks.

The tank is a very important part of Israel’s defense strategy. The entire country is only about the size of New Jersey and if they are to defend themselves they need to be well prepared to fight land battles, in hilly and in desert terrain, and that means tanks.

When Israel was first invaded in the 1948 War of Independence they had only a few small tanks they had purchased from France and half of them did not work. When the 6 Day War broke out in 1967 they were in better shape with tanks they had purchased from other countries, but it was still not the best. By the time of the Yom Kipper War in 1973 they had a wide variety of tanks they had sourced from all over the world. They used their tanks very effectively to achieve amazing tank victories, especially against Syria in the Golan Heights. This became the story of “The tank that saved Israel”.

Even with their successes Israel realized they needed to build their own specialized tank with their own sophisticated electronics. What they came up with is a huge fighting machine called the Merkava.  They then decided this tank and crew needed protection from the oppositions amour piercing tank missiles. The result is every tank has its own “Iron Dome” and the enemies missiles are shot out of the sky before they even get close.

Attached is a picture of many of us with this incredible machine. Advice to the world—Don’t get into a tank fight with Israel.
