Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez has order city and county jails to comply with requests from the federal government on detaining illegal immigrants.

Shortly after the announcement by Gimenez, President Donald Trump tweeted, “Miami-Dade Mayor drops sanctuary policy. Right decision. Strong!”

Gimenez took the step amid fears of losing potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for defying federal immigration officials in light of executive orders recently signed by President Trump.

“In light of the provisions of the executive order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,” Gimenez ordered Daniel Junior, the interim director of Miami-Dade’s corrections and rehabilitation department.

Miami-Dade had previously refused to indefinitely detain illegal immigrant inmates wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since 2013, during the time of the Obama administration.

Miami-Dade County is due to receive $355 million from the federal government this year and put the funding at risk if it violated President Trump’s executive orders.
