Pola Hansberger Responds To Wall Street Journal

Regarding the Wall Street Journal’s front page article headlined “Illegal Immigrants Get Health Care” on March 25, which highlights the tremendous effect that open borders have on health care costs and its availability for American citizens, please know that I am a legal immigrant who came to America legally from Nicaragua at the age of 18. I had to pass a health examination and I had to swear allegiance to the United States of America, and I had to further state that I would not be a burden to the American taxpayer. I did all of this.

I assimilated, learned English, and worked hard in America, including 18 years traveling the world as a Pan American Airlines flight attendant. I have studied the tremendous cost and problems that uncontrolled and illegal immigration has had on America. A few facts and statistics:

There may be as many as 30 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and almost all rely on some form of free or subsidized health care.

Los Angeles County alone reports 1,060,000 illegals living there.

It costs $12 billion a year in the U.S. to pay for the primary and secondary school education for the children of illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigrants make up 30% of the U.S. prison population.

It costs $1.6 billion a year in the U.S. to pay for the imprisonment of illegal immigrants.

I recently had a health care experience that showed me first hand just how much emergency care has deteriorated in America due to illegal immigration. One evening I started having abdominal pains, and at 9:00pm my husband and I decided that I needed to go to the local hospital emergency room. When we arrived, we found the emergency room jammed with many people, and many different languages being spoken by the waiting patients, many of whom appeared to be illegal immigrants awaiting free care . I waited there in pain for 5 hours and finally gave up and went back home at 2:00am. I unfortunately was able to witness firsthand the effect that illegal immigration has had on the American health care system and the treatment of American citizens in our hospitals.
