Texas Governor Greg Abbott intends to help correct the state’s illegal immigration problem by signing legislation that could impose fines and even put sheriffs of sanctuary cities in jail if they refuse to enforce immigration statutes.
Gov. Abbott particularly has his eyes on Travis County, where the Texas state capital city of Austin is located. Abbott already has cut $1.5 million in funding to Travis County because of its pro-sanctuary county sheriff.
Prison for the Travis County sheriff could be next on the horizon.
Abbott explained that “[the] reason why is…the [Travis County] sheriff refused to honor ICE [U.S. Immigration And Customs Enforcement] detainer requests and instead released back out onto the streets very dangerous criminals.”
“Criminals who had been arrested for sexual assault, including sexual assault of a minor, compromising the safety of our fellow Texans,” Abbott continued. “Let me tell you something. If a sheriff refuses to enforce the laws…they need to quit their job. If they don’t want to enforce the law, they should not be in law enforcement.”
“Oddly enough, these sheriffs could wind up behind the very bars they are releasing these criminals from,” Abbott concluded.
Especially in Travis County, Texas.
